Using ICT in education

Creating Stop Motion Animation

>> Watch the video demonstration <<

In this example, an activity to create a stop motion video is used to challenge a small group of reluctant students to engage more fully in classwork.

What was the purpose of the activity?

The purpose of the activity was to introduce a small group of 8-year-olds to cooperative learning, peer assessment and group work. Creating an animation was more likely to capture their interest and attention. At the end of the activity, students would be better able to:

  • Work in groups to achieve a shared aim
  • Learn from each other in a collaborate way

How the activity worked in the classroom?

The students created a variety of stop animation videos. The quality of each video improved each time as the students were given opportunities to assess their work and discuss how they could improve it. It involved a lot of problem-solving and creative thinking.

The students successfully learned how to use Hue animation independently and they were also able to add background music to their videos with little or no help.

The students wanted to take part in this project so it forced them to stop and listen to others.

How to develop the technology skills?

The teacher worked with a colleague to learn how to use the software and had a good familiarity with video from personal use.

What technology can be used and are the alternatives?

The activity was created in the school’s Mac lab using Hue Stop Animation, YouTube and MP3 Downloader, and the audio software Audacity. It is essential to have a tripod (or fixed camera) and camera to make effective stop motion videos.
